Project: CANNABIS RETAIL SOLUTIONS FOR DISPENSARY OWNERS

As part of a two-phased approach, Axis Display Group partnered with the world’s most trusted resource in helping people learn about and locate legal cannabis, Leafly. For over a decade, Leafly has been pioneering the marijuana industry, making it safer and easier for people to experience the benefits of cannabis throughout North America.
In 2019, Leafly set out to create and implement a new, industry-wide cannabis classification model (Leafly Cannabis Guide™ ). This system, far more detailed, descriptive, and accurate than historical product classification models, enables budtenders and customers to educate themselves on different aspects of a cannabis product’s chemical and terpene makeup, increasing the likelihood of finding that perfect product match the first time.
Once the system had been conceptualized and rolled out online, Leafly knew it needed to support its network of dispensaries by creating an easily identifiable way to take this knowledge offline and make it widely available in the customer journey. They partnered with AXIS to create a collection of signage, placards, educational sheets, stickers, clings and other wayfinding materials that brought the digital experience to life in-stores and helped budtenders and consumers alike expand their knowledge about strain diversity and the possibilities of cannabis consumption overall. ►Kicking Off Phase 2

In any industry, retail marketing, product presentation, and visual merchandising can be challenging. Standing out among the competition is difficult, especially when up against preconceived notions and ever-changing industry regulations.
The experience for many when visiting a dispensary is usually one of the following: sterile and medical; chaotic and cluttered; seedy and suspicious; or fancy and extra. Even with these vast generalizations, the shared sentiment here is usually that shopping for cannabis is overwhelming. Leafly is adamant about changing the narrative on what it means to be a cannabis user, and wanted to create a branded in-store experience for dispensary owners that streamlined product selection, made customers feel safe and understood, and provided an opportunity to build each location’s unique brand story and vibe in a controlled, “out-of-the-box” manner.

Leafly tapped into AXIS expertise to create a collection of displays, fixtures, tables, stands, and other merchandising units designed to display the graphics, signage, and other elements of their Cannabis Guide, while also giving dispensaries a way to easily outfit and brand their store top to bottom with custom signage, kit add-ons, merchandising support, and more.
►The Axis process

After conducting extensive research on regulatory codes, safety and security parameters, durability, functionality, and overall aesthetic, AXIS developed eight scalable and highly customizable renderings. These renderings were then prototyped, and once accepted, brought to life at two major cannabis industry trade shows. Feedback from professionals, customers, and dispensary owners was collected, situational testing was completed, and improvements were made.

A note for those outside the cannabis industry:
This project was designed to “grow with the brand.” While it would be wonderful for a cannabis retailer or dispensary owner to sign off on all of these collaborative pieces, we know that is not always feasible. These retail solutions have enough flexibility, adaptability, and customization built in to work interdependently or independently, affording max impact for a variety of shop settings, no matter the format, location, or budget.
